Mr Shatner at Work
13 October 2005Look, I'm not even going to try justifying the relevance of this post, but it is sort of technology related and it really does need to be seen:

Fact: My first ever computer was a Vic-20. It was already hopelessly out of date by the time I got it, so you couldn't buy any compatible software in my local computer shop and I had to learn to program just so I could write some games to play on the damn thing.
Comments:
Learning to program never hurt anyone!
My parents bought three Vic20s which didn't work before getting an Amstrad which did. The Amstrad was a much better machine anyway (more modern, better design, more support in 1984).
I bet those boxes would have flown off the shelves if Shatner had threatened to sing. "Get a Vic 20, or it's Lucy in the sky with diamonds! Picture yourself on a boat..." Arggh! Okay! I'll take two!
I had a much stranger introduction to home computing, kicking off with a terminal attached by 2400 baud modem to the nearby university mainframe.
This meant me and my brother could take a break in the school holidays from skateboards and walkie-talkies to play 'Adventure' by text.
In practice, this game involved hammering 'N', 'E', 'S', or 'W' into a big metal keyboard, then waiting for ten minutes only to receive the message "You are still in a woods. Which direction, dwarf?"
