Blogs transform into books! Introducing, 'blooks'.

03 April 2006

The blog phenomenon just keeps getting bigger and bigger. So much so in fact, that now even blogs that have found new lives offline in the real world have their own special awards!

The 'Blooker prize' rewards blogs that have successfully made the transition from the internet to become published hard copy books in their own right. The overall Blooker Prize winner, as well as the winner of the non-fiction category, was Julie Powell for her blog which became a book entitled 'Julie and Julia'.

Julie, a disillusioned 32 year old stuck in a dead end job, decided to make her life more interesting by dedicating a blog to her efforts to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child's 'The French Chef Cookbook' within a year. Her blog was so extremely successful that when she finally ran out of money and couldn't afford to cook further recipes, readers of her blog donated sufficient money for her to both continue in the kitchen and keep writing blog entries for them to read.

Now of course she has a publishing deal and her blog is a Blooker Prize winning read. It just goes to show that although a blog might seem just a fun place have a rant and give people an insight into your life, it could also be a route to a lucrative new career. So hang in there, fellow bloggers!

Comments:

It does show there's a lot of professional-quality writing talent creating blogs today. I do often see blogs though that were obviously set up purely to land book deals, usually involving relating the wacky adventures as someone jumps through hoops to win a stupid pub bet. Those types of blog are getting a bit tiresome now.
